The wife of a man with terminal cancer has thanked the people of Dundee after they donated a four-figure sum to help her family enjoy one last holiday together.
Last week The Courier told of an online plea by Nicole Dunlop, daughter of terminally ill Michael McCartney, to raise £1,500 to go towards a special family break at a lodge cabin retreat.
Michael was diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumour in 2011.
And Nicole was hopeful people would rally round.
Now, within days of the appeal going live, generous locals have donated more than £1,700.
Michael’s grateful wife Pauline praised the generosity displayed by the people inspired by her husband’s plight.
She said: “It’s absolutely incredible.
“The response has been just amazing.
“I know that Dundee is well known when it comes to giving and helping people, but when it is actually happening to you it’s hard to explain.”
Pauline continued: “I’ve been kept quite busy looking after Michael but I knew that a lot of people were donating.
“The donation from Taza Indian Restaurant, who gave us more than £500, was one which really blew me away.
“We went to a lodge in Pitlochry last year and Michael loved it.
“We’ll look to get away in February some time.”
Last week Abertay student Nicole inspired people throughout the country with a heartfelt tribute to her Aberdeen- supporting father.
She asked for help in gaining access to a corporate box to allow Michael to watch his team in style.
Her plea was shared hundreds of times and attracted support from all over the country including from former Aberdeen player Joe Harper.
The Pittodrie club later granted the request after multiple offers of corporate boxes and transport to and from the game.
“At the moment we’re just focusing on getting Michael to the football match,” Pauline said.
