Group set up to aid refugees will now help out closer to home

A charity set up to help Syrian refugees has decided to start giving help to people in its home city of Dundee.

Dundee Refugee Support recently remodelled itself as Dundee The Caring City, taking inspiration from a similar organisation in Glasgow.

The group was formed in the wake of the refugee crisis and has sent donations to those stranded across Europe, as well as organising solidarity events.

It raised so much through its appeals for clothes, toiletries and food that it has now decided to reach out to homeless people across Tayside.

Founder Sammi Craig said: “The reaction has been really positive.

“We have been attending meetings for Dundee Drop In and will be working in conjunction with other organisations in Dundee to share resources and get the right aid to the right people.

“In terms of the reach, we will help as many as need it.”

Director Mike Strachan said: “Forming Dundee The Caring City means we can help within the wider community and across Scotland.”
