Dundee United legends are rallying round former team-mate Frank Kopel by taking part in a sponsored walk at Tannadice later this month.

Members of the public are being invited to join in and rub shoulders with footballing stars past and present while raising money for the Frank Kopel Campaign.

Frank, 64, played for United for 10 years and was there in 1981, during the club’s ‘glory years’. Since he was diagnosed with dementia in 2009 his friends and former team-mates have supported his cause.

Former captain Paul Hegarty, Hamish McAlpine, Dave Narey and many more are expected to take to the track on Sunday February 23. Family friend Pat Kelly, who is helping organise the event said they hope to attract 1,000 members of the public.

He said: “Most of the ’83 and ’81 teams will be there but it is not just the older players, there will be some new players taking part as well.

“Anyone else who wants to join us is more than welcome. It is amazing the number of United supporters who have never actually been around the track so it will be a great experience for many people.

“There will also be a chance for people to get autographs signed. It is open to anyone and we also have Dundee supporters and other teams coming along.”

The walk starts at 1.30pm and there is no set distance. Sponsorship forms for the public are available in the United club shop, the Taxi Club in Rosebank Street and Club 83, St Salvador Street.

In the evening the Taxi Club will also host a raffle and a fun get-together to raise more funds.

Frank’s wife Amanda said: “People have been so kind in rallying around to support Frank. It’s so humbling to see all his ex-colleagues from the football world and so many friends being so kind to us.

“I have also had many calls from Dundee supporters who also want to take part in the walk and, of course, they are also most welcome.

“This gesture from Dundee fans means a great deal to Frank. These are great events and Frank and I would like to thank everyone involved in organising this.”

Other ex-Dundee United players including Dave Bowman, John Holt and Jamie McCunnie will be raising funds with a bucket collection before the Kilmarnock game next Saturday.
