Extra police will be out on the streets in the city centre during the festive season.
The patrols start on Saturday with the aim of cutting the risk of crime for daytime shoppers and night-time pub and club-goers.
Chief Inspector Shaun McKillop said: “Keeping people safe during the festive season and reducing the potential for any serious or violent incidents is our priority.
“Special constables and community wardens will be assisting our police officers, and as well as being visible on the streets people will see our police officers within licensed premises.”
He said added: “Keep cash, purses and wallets out of sight when shopping. Only take them out when you absolutely need to and avoid carrying more cash than you need.
“Be on your guard and don’t get distracted. Women with handbags should keep them closed at all times and have bag in front of them.
“Don’t leave handbags in shopping trolleys,” he concluded.
