Plans for major new function suite and events venue in West Marketgait

Plans for a function suite capable of hosting up to 500 people and two takeaways have been given the go-ahead.

Dundee City Council has granted planning permission for the development at West Marketgait, which is scheduled to open in September.

The suite will be housed in the larger part of the unit and will used primarily for private hire events, but could also host comedy gigs and performances by local bands.

Currently vacant, the site is located under the Grosvenor G Casino and close to several other bars and nightclubs.

Developer Nazir Kashmiri, 44, owns a number of other businesses in the area, including the Marco Polo takeaway around the corner.

He said the project would fill a gap.

“Dundee doesn’t have anything that can host more than 300 people and this causes many large companies and organisations to go out of town.

“We will be able to host up to 500 people, which means we can take on larger weddings, stand-up comedy events or local bands.

“It will fit nicely into the area because after a function many people like to go to a casino, and that’s only upstairs.

“The two takeaways will be an American pizza company and the other will sell fish and chips, so something different to what is offered around the corner.

“Hopefully, with everything going to plan, we will be open by September this year, just in time for the universities starting back and for people looking to book Christmas parties.”
