One of Dundee’s busiest car parks will be closed overnight in a bid to combat antisocial behaviour.
Access to West Bell Street will be blocked between 6pm and 6am each day, though permit holders will be able to gain access at any time.
Concerns had been raised about the behaviour of people hanging around the car park at night, while it has also been used as a place to congregate by boy racers.
Though the move aims to prevent some of those people from entering, others users will be able to exit the car park at any time.
The decision has been taken at the same time as a new pay on foot system is introduced at the busy car park.
City Development convener Will Dawson said: “West Bell Street Car Park was in need of a change. This new payment system is now in line with our Car Parking Strategy.
“Over the years we have received reports of antisocial behaviour in the car park and we carried out an investigation to stop this from happening.
“It has been decided a 6pm to 6am closure is the best way to stop this from happening.”
The new payment system will be introduced at a cost of around £160,000, which the council administration believes will be money well spent.
Councillors approved the move in October 2015 in an effort to make payment more convenient and bring it in line with other payment systems across the city.
The outgoing machines had been described as “defunct” as they regularly failed to take money, while the pay and display model restricted flexibility.
The decision to spend the money did split councillors, however, as it took an 18-11 vote to secure backing.
Labour councillors had questioned whether the money might be better spent elsewhere, claiming that the car park worked “well enough” without any investment.
The council, however, said it was important that efforts be made to improve security and facilities.
The changes will come into effect on April 1.
