A PE teacher who kissed a pupil in a Dundee nightclub has kept his job.
Graham Hopkins, a physical education teacher at a council-run secondary school in the city, was reprimanded by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).
He admitted kissing the pupil in Liquid nightclub in December 2014.
The report on the case, published by the GTCS, said Mr Hopkins was approached by two females one of whom he “knew as a pupil” and the other who he would be “expected to know” was a pupil.
Mr Hopkins admitted he socialised with the pupils, had his picture taken with them and kissed the second girl.
He failed to tell the school’s management that the pupils were likely to be under 18.
Mr Hopkins admitted his fitness to teach was impaired.
He received a Reprimand with Consent Order.
Mr Hopkins’ statement to the GTCS read: “I freely and willingly consent to a reprimand being imposed upon me in view of my admission of the allegation set out above.
“I understand that this reprimand will be recorded against my entry in GTC Scotland’s Register of teachers for an aggregated period of one year from the date of signing.”
Among the reasons given for deciding not to investigate the case further, the panel at the GTCS said it took into consideration the fact that physical harm had not been caused to a child or pupil.
The panel concluded Mr Hopkins had admitted his actions and demonstrated “genuine remorse” and that there was evidence attesting to his “good character and history”.
A Dundee City Council spokesman said: “We do not discuss individual personnel matters.”
However, education convener councillor Stewart Hunter said Mr Hopkins’ actions were “unacceptable”.
He said: “It is completely inappropriate conduct for a teacher.
“I wasn’t aware of the incident but I will be looking into the matter to see what action has been taken.
“Conduct like this involving pupils under the care of a teacher is wholly unacceptable.”
A spokesman for the parent council of the school involved declined to comment but said the parent council had given a “full vote of confidence to the school’s management team”.
