Plans for new hotel next to Olympia swimming pool in Dundee

Plans for new hotel next to Olympia swimming pool in Dundee

Plans for a 100-bedroom hotel next to the Olympia swimming pool and leisure centre have been unveiled.

The building would replace the Shell Discovery filling station on East Marketgait.

In a submission to Dundee City Council, architect Peter Inglis said: “The proposal would be to clear the site and erect a new hotel to meet the demand for hotel bedrooms resulting from the expansion of cultural tourism in the city.

“This prominent site is ideally located to provide a service for both visitors and local residents.

“Visitors arriving by car can be accommodated in the new multi-storey car park in East Whale Lane and a bridge link between the car park and the hotel would provide a safe and convenient access.”

The main entrance to the hotel would be to the north end, beside the entrance to Olympia.

These access arrangements would leave the East Marketgait frontage clear of vehicles, allowing the hotel to have a glazed frontage similar to the leisure centre.

The main public areas of the hotel would be visible behind this.

Mr Inglis is proposing the main bedroom block would be clad in a blue engineering brick, similar to the multi-storey car park, with feature panels around selected windows on the East Marketgait side.

He said: “The site is ideally placed to complement the Dundee waterfront development and embrace its vision to transform the city into a world-leading waterfront destination for visitors and businesses through the enhancement of its physical, economic and cultural assets.

“The proposed new V&A gallery, the McManus, DCA and Dundee Rep will all be within easy walking distance of this site.

“While the site is not in the central conservation area, it is adjacent and also close to the quayside area, including the Customs House.

“The design process has been developed over several months with the planning department.”

No potential operator for the hotel has been announced.

The city council has been keen to see more hotels built to boost Dundee’s growing reputation as a visitor destination.

Earlier this month plans for a hotel in Lower Dens Works on Constable Street were announced.
