North East Labour MSP Jenny Marra is to write to the General Medical Council requesting an update on its investigation into a suspended former Tayside surgeon.
The shadow health secretary’s involvement follows a meeting with Dundee man Pat Kelly, 55, who had demanded an independent public inquiry after claiming he was the victim of a botched operation by Professor Muftah Salem Eljamel in 2007.
Consultant neurological surgeon Professor Eljamel was suspended from his post last year and since then many people have come forward to say they were left with long-term health difficulties.
An internal investigation has been concluded by NHS Tayside and the GMC is holding a retrospective investigation.
