There have been tears of joy as visitors flock to take tea in one of Dundee’s most iconic and rarely open buildings.

The doors to 19th Century mansion Camperdown House have been opened to the public as a temporary student-run vintage tearoom.

The venture, which is being used as a finishing school for catering and hospitality students, has proved very popular.

The Dundee and Angus College initiative will run for just six weeks and after a busy first week this weekend is already fully booked.

There are three sittings available for afternoon tea, each catering for 50 people at a time.

The council-owned venue is clearly held in high esteem by those who are visiting the tea room, said Kichelle Williams, one of eight lecturing staff involved in the project.

She said: “One lady customer actually had tears in her eyes when she told me how wonderful it was to be able to take tea in this iconic building.Click here for a full photo gallery“Evidently she was a frequent visitor to Camperdown House when she was a child.”

The college has been delighted with the public’s appetite for an authentic by-gone experience afternoon tea served in luxurious surroundings by staff in 19th Century outfits with an outpouring of positive feedback on social media.

As well as offering a vintage service in the grade A neo-classical building, the project also gives some of the best students the chance to gain vital experience in the hospitality and tourism industry.

The tea-room project is a collaboration between D&A College, Dundee City Council, and Enterprise@D&A, a European Regional Development Fund project.

Dundee City Councillor Stewart Hunter said the venture is in keeping with the elegance of the stately home and supporting it could be key to keeping the house open to the public.

Run as a non-profit-making enterprise, and operating from Tuesday to Sunday, the tearoom will be open until Sunday, August 9.

Bookings remain high with some places still available next week, and limited availability for next weekend.

To book call 01382 834921 or visit dundeeandangus.ac.uk/tearoom. The tea room is accessible for wheelchair users.
