Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport Shona Robison officially opened Dundee’s new Olympia swimming pool.
More than 140,000 people have visited the attraction since it opened its doors at the end of June.
Ms Robison said: “The new Olympia centre is great for the people of Dundee and it’s fantastic to hear that it is already being so well used.
“The numbers are absolutely amazing. I want to congratulate the city council on the investment they are putting into sports facilities. It’s all about getting people more active.”
She helped Lord Provost Bob Duncan, who is chairman of Leisure & Culture Dundee, unveil a plaque to mark the opening.
“This is an excellent development providing quality facilities and the visitor numbers reflect that,” she added.
“There are activities for families as well as for the more serious swimmer. The gym equipment is also proving very popular.
“I’m absolutely delighted to be here today in what’s going to be an iconic building in the city.
“It’s a fantastic building for the athletes and the members of the public. It’s been really great to see people having so much fun in the building.
“We would also like to thank Sport-Scotland for their £3 million contribution to this project.”
Dundee City Council leader Ken Guild handed over keys to Sinclair Aitken, vice-chairman of Leisure & Culture Dundee.
“This is the centrepiece of a massive investment programme that the city council is taking forward for the future of sport in Dundee,” he said.
“It is a place that is being enjoyed by families as well as a facility where competitive swimmers are honing their skills.
“Olympia has a wide appeal and is encouraging visitors to come to the city,” he added.
Dundee’s new leisure centre includes an adaptable 50-metre competition pool, a wave pool, rapid river, dive pool, flumes and a fitness suite.
Team GB swimmers Robbie Renwick and Caitlin McClatchey cut the ribbon during yesterday’s opening ceremony.
Caitlin said: “It’s incredible that Dundee has such an amazing sports facility.
“I think it will be great to encourage the next generation to get into swimming, water polo and other sports.”
Robbie added: “It’s a great facility and it’s great to have 50-metre access. Hopefully, in a few more years we’ll see the next generation coming through.”
Olympia is operated by Leisure & Culture Dundee, working in partnership with Dundee City Council.
A number of public swimming events are being organised to celebrate the official opening including an Ibiza pool party.
