Family stunned by response to appeal for brave youngster battling life-threatening condition

The generosity of the Dundee public has stunned a family fighting to secure a bright future for a battling youngster.

A massive sold-out party night and auction takes place in the city this evening to raise funds for brave three-year-old Riley Welsh.

Friends and family have joined football clubs, top businesses and stars such as Dundee-born fashion designer Hayley Scanlan in donating items.

The money raised at the event, which takes place at the Chambers East Function Suite, could make a huge difference to Riley’s life as he grows older.

He was born in Ninewells in November 2011, but though seemingly healthy was swiftly diagnosed with a life-threatening condition.

He was born with a trachea-oesophageal fistula, which meant his oesophagus wasn’t attached to his stomach, rendering him unable to swallow food.

The complex condition saw Riley and his mum Leigh in and out of hospital for months and has left him with a number of lasting health issues, including visual impairment.

Now, his family have become aware that he will need additional support and equipment for the home as he grows older.

Close family member Alison Welsh has been among those organising the fundraising All for Riley event and told The Courier: “We have been overwhelmed with the support we’ve received from the Dundee people.

“We initially asked family and friends for their support but since then it has taken off, with tickets sold out and a huge number of individuals and businesses offering auction items.

“In fact, more than £1,000 has also been donated by people who can’t attend, which is just astounding.

“The NHS have been great, but as Riley gets older he needs more support and the family just couldn’t afford that without this help.

“This is already beyond Leigh’s wildest dreams. She has been amazing since Riley was born even training as a nurse to ensure that she can care for him and help him with his life,” she said.
