Everest conquerors talk adventure at Gardyne Theatre
ByThe Courier Reporter
Two of Mount Everest’s most influential conquerors were in Dundee for a talk at the Gardyne Theatre.
In the 60th anniversary year of the first ascent of Everest in 1953 Doug Scott CBE and Paul ‘Tut’ Braithwaite delivered their Big Walls and High Mountains talk.
The evening was illustrated by Doug’s mountain photography and punctuated by the stories and humour that a lifetime of friendship and mountain memories bring.
Tut is famous as the climber who succeeded, where seven previous expeditions failed, to climb the steep rock wall on the south-west face of Everest.
He and Dougal Haston reached the mountain’s summit and entered the history books as the first Britons to stand on top of the world.
Doug and Tut have climbed new routes around the world, from Mount Asgard on Baffin Island in Canage, with its 1km vertical “big-wall”, to Mount Kenya.
Tut is the founder of Vertical Access Ltd, a rope access company working in the civil engineering, rail, bridge and nuclear industries.
