Dundee bands set to take over livings rooms for Oxjam

Music lovers in Dundee have been offered the chance to have their very own house band for the night, as part of this year’s Oxjam Music Festival.

Some of the city’s finest live acts have signed up to play live in front rooms throughout October.

The month-long event is being organised by music promoter Daisy Dundee, who last year persuaded bands to play gigs in their own homes as part of the national festival’s Living Room Legends series.

Eleven acts took part across five weeks last October, with acoustic gigs in bedrooms, loud lounge gigs, a grand piano kitchen concert, pop-up sets in an artist’s studio and a folk duo’s garage.

They even took one living room out on to the streets. The event also extended across the Tay to conservatories in Kirkcaldy and outside decks in Tayport.

Gigs were streamed online and viewers donated tips as they watched live. Last year’s event raised more than £500 for Oxfam and this year more than 23 bands have pledged to play a house gig.

Three events held over the past weekend have already raised £514.02.

Daisy said: “Last year was a lot of fun. Everyone was really generous with their time and space. Bands opened up their own homes and people came, donated and most importantly, they listened.

“Together we raised over £500 for Oxfam but also highlighted the breadth of talent across our city to people both inside and outside of Dundee.

“I had bands from all over Scotland asking to play because they thought it was such a cool idea and there was nothing similar going on in their home town.

“This year, the emphasis is entirely on Dundee, with only local bands taking part in local homes, partly to highlight the importance of the grassroots live music scene during the City of Culture bid.

“Oxjam is the perfect fit because it places a strong emphasis on the promotion of the local music scene wherever you are, music that is untapped, under-resourced and under-appreciated.”

Gigs will be unplugged, acoustic affairs or fully-plugged in live experiences, depending on location and the wishes of the host.

Guests will donate to enter and collections will be taken on the night, with all monies going to Oxfam in their fight against poverty.

Members of Anderson McGinty Webster Ward and Fisher kicked off the month-long programme when they performed in a Dundee conservatory on Friday.

Other top names tuning up to play include The Mirror Trap, Vladimir, Scary People, esperi and Model Aeroplanes.

House gig hosts are being recruited throughout the month, with gig venues so far including living rooms in tenements and even a summer house.

Daisy said: “By hosting or attending an Oxjam gig, people are not only contributing to the lives of those that need it around the world but also to young musicians in their own home town.”

This weekend will see Vladimir play in a Barnhill lounge on Friday night, Yoko Pwno in a Riverside living room on Saturday night and The Jagged Violet and The Onion Club in a summer house in Craigie on Sunday.

People can still get involved by donating direct online via justgiving.com/dundeejam2013 and following bands on twitter @dundeejam.
