A 21-year-old man caught five times over the drink-drive limit has been fined, banned and had his car confiscated.
“Extremely concerned” motorists called 999 after witnessing Dawid Moruzgala’s driving in Dundee on Monday night.
Moruzgala, who only passed his test six months ago, admitted driving with a breath reading of 110 mics, driving without insurance and initially failing to give a breath test.
A not guilty plea to a charge that he drove the wrong way on the Kingsway in the face of oncoming traffic was accepted by prosecutors.
Depute fiscal Kirsten Thomson told Dundee Sheriff Court: “At 8pm police received two 999 calls from extremely concerned motorists about the manner in which the accused’s vehicle was driving on the Kingsway.
“At shortly after 8pm a further 999 call was received. A member of the public followed the accused on to Rosemount Road and the accused was seen to enter a house there.”
Officers attended and the accused was traced in the kitchen.
Police noted Moruzgala was unsteady on his feet and smelled strongly of alcohol.
Police checks confirmed it was his vehicle, but despite five attempts he could not provide a specimen of breath in the officers’ car.
He was later breathalysed at Bell Street headquarters and found to be five times over the legal limit. Further checks revealed the vehicle was uninsured.
Ross Bennett, defending said: “He has no issue with the car being confiscated. With regard to mitigation, I am having difficulty finding any.
“He came to Dundee from Poland last month and has been working at a car wash.
“He was drinking and was not able to give me a rational explanation why he got into the car. He is obviously concerned about the matter.”
Sheriff Smith told Moruzgala, of Nelson Street, that his vehicle would be seized.
He was fined £625 and banned from driving for two-and-a-half years.
