A Dundee mum whose final wish was to see her daughter walk down the aisle has died just weeks after the wedding.
Michelle Shirkey had been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and told she might not live long enough to see daughter Cheryl Rennie-Soutar’s marriage ceremony.
But, after folk across the city rallied round to help, the wedding was moved forward at short notice so Michelle could be there on the day.
Cheryl, 26, said her mum felt ready to go after having her dying wishes granted.
Cheryl, who married Kevin at Le Mirage on December 3, said: “That was her last wish to be at the wedding.
“She loved the wedding and was really happy. We had pictures taken and she was over the moon. She was up dancing and everything.
“We rushed the wedding through in five to 10 days because we wanted her to be able to walk so she wouldn’t be in a wheelchair.
“I’m glad she was able to do everything she wanted to because we said at the start to do a bucket list and we made sure she got them all done that’s the main thing.”
Michelle passed away in her sleep on Monday morning at her mother’s house.
The 47-year-old had also been able to spend Christmas day with Cheryl and her family, watching her grandchildren open their presents.
Cheryl, who lives in Fintry, said: “She died on Monday at 11.15am I was there because I checked on her 40 minutes before and when I went up later she had gone in her sleep.
“She was peaceful and out of pain for the last week, so we’re happy about that.
“We’d seen her going through pain so knew this was the best thing for her, I think it was her time to go.
“The day before, she thanked me for everything that had been happening and said it was her time and I should prepare, so she seemed to know.
“It is still a difficult thing for us to go through. She had Christmas with us, so it was a really nice last few weeks for her.”
Michelle’s funeral will be at Our Lady of Sorrows in Fintry on Monday at 1.30pm, and Barnhill Cemetery at 2.30pm.
