Games and digital technology are set to play a key role in developing the V&A at Dundee design museum.
The backers of the £45 million project arranged for a “digital mash” to be staged, giving anyone the chance to offer suggestions about how to make the museum experience for visitors as playful and interactive as possible.
Sophia George, the V&A’s first game designer in residence, led Monday night’s event.
She said: “Museums are absolutely fascinating, inspirational places, but there is definitely a role for ideas from digital technology and games to change how art and design are displayed, experienced and enjoyed.
“I’m particularly looking forward to thinking about how technology can help bring the V&A at Dundee experience to life before someone even visits the beautiful Kengo Kuma building, and long after they have left the museum.
“I graduated from Abertay University and also formed my company in Dundee, so it’s a thrill to be involved with the V&A at Dundee project.”
Sophia’s appearance was part of the NEoN digital arts festival being staged in the city.
Curator Clare Brennan said: “As Dundee looks towards a bright cultural future, and having already been shortlisted for UK City of Culture 2017, it’s wonderful that the V&A at Dundee team are working so closely with our creative communities to directly inform their digital ideas.”
The museum, which is intended to be the main attraction of the redeveloped central waterfront, intends to challenge traditional ideas about interpreting and displaying exhibits.
Digital design and technology will be a key part of its approach.
Philip Long, director of V&A at Dundee, said: “Technology and digital media will play a key role in the way visitors interact with V&A at Dundee, and to have a designer of the calibre of Sophia George leading the discussion on how they would like to do that is invaluable.
“The digital expertise that exists in Dundee is outstanding and the opportunity to harness that to help us tell the story of Scotland’s incredible design heritage and the innovation that underpins it is truly exciting.”
