Dundee MP appeals for help for Muirfield Contracts apprentices
ByThe Courier Reporter
The collapse of Muirfield Contracts has led a Dundee MP to call for apprentices to be given more government contracts.
Jim McGovern wrote to Dundee City Council and the Scottish Government to urge them to work closer with the V&A contractors to ensure a stable future for Muirfield’s redundant apprentices.
He said: “I was today informed that out of the apprentices who have been made redundant from Muirfield Contracts, only nine have secured new positions while 23 have yet to find roles.
“As Dundee begins to regenerate with the V&A as the centrepiece of the city’s redevelopment, Dundee will become a hive of construction activity and it will be a great tragedy if apprenticeship places cannot be found while all of this takes place.
“It was also recently found that there has been a rise in the number of Scottish building apprenticeships, but to prevent Dundee from being left behind in this as a result of the Muirfield collapse putting young people off construction apprenticeships, we should be leading the way by showing that such qualifications are valued and open the door to a successful career.”
