A river of sewage forced the emergency closure of Lochee High Street and work is continuing to repair a blockage in the main sewer.
Nearby pubs Kelly’s Bar and the Lochee Sports Bar suffered flooding in their basements on Tuesday and Scottish Water worked overnight to pump the sewage away.
Scottish Water still has teams on site working to gain access to the main sewer via a manhole somewhere underneath a construction site.
Yesterday the sewer reached its limit and, when workers lifted the cover, at the lowest area of the High Street, the diluted sewage flowed out into the street.
Pedestrians struggled to cross the street at one point but staf from Scottish Water worked quickly to pump the water away and return the road to normal.
The sewer had filled completely so workers redirected the sewer flows further down the network and away from the blocked section.
A Scottish Water spokesman on site said construction work being carried out as part of the major redevelopment of the former Highgate Shopping Centre had blocked the main sewer for the area, leaving the water nowhere to go.
Diggers were also being used to gain access to a manhole underneath the construction site so teams could repair the drain.
However, this proved difficult and more machinery was ordered to continue work.
A spokesman said: “We are having difficulty safely accessing the sewer to perform a repair but have ordered machinery and we aim to start the repair as soon as possible.
“The pumping arrangement will continue overnight and we should be able to perform a repair once we have excavated the area and located the other services underground.”
The section of High Street remains closed to traffic at the junction with Burnside Street. A diversion route for drivers is via the Lochee bypass.
Dundee City Council is investigating the cause of the blockage.
