A man who soiled himself and lay in his own urine on two separate days at Ninewells Hospital has been jailed.
Brian John Morrison, 42, swore at staff and police as he lay on the ground at A&E, soaked in urine, just days after having soiled himself in the same department and having to be taken away by police to sober up.
Morrison first appeared at Dundee Sheriff Court on Friday and was fined £200 following the initial incident on Thursday.
He appeared from custody again, having once more been drunk at A&E on Saturday, and was charged with breach of the peace.
Depute fiscal Kirsten Thomson told the court: “The accused has appeared in court on numerous occasions for alcohol-related incidents.
“He was brought into A&E heavily intoxicated. A member of staff woke him up and asked him to leave but he began shouting and swearing at her.”
Solicitor Anika Jethwa said Morrison only started offending in 2010 when he lost his managerial job, his marriage broke up and contact with his children was stopped.
She added: “Previously he was just drunk and incapable and did not shout and swear so the Crown couldn’t charge him with breach of the peace.
“However this time he did. He has a severe alcohol addiction, he know where the help is but he is not seeking it.”
Sheriff Alastair Brown told Morrison the courts could sympathise with people who had alcohol problems but when it came to abusing hospital staff, those staff and the public in general expect to be protected.
“The sheriffs of Dundee will not let them down,” he said, jailing Morrison for eight months.
