The achievements of Dundee’s Mary Lily Walker and Mary Slessor are just some of the inspirational stories to be heard during the city’s three-week festival next month.
Returning for the ninth year, Dundee Women’s Festival boasts a programme of around 80 events taking place from March 2 to 22.
The festival coincides with International Women’s Day, which is held annually on March 8, celebrating economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.
It is also known as the United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace.
As well as inspirational talks on key women in history, there will be activities ranging from belly-dancing to ukulele workshops, world cookery to drystane dyking, and organisers hope there will be something for everyone.
Dundee Women’s International Centre will also be hosting cookery lessons from around the world to give people a chance to try their hand at something different.
Eleanor Ballantye, Dundee Women’s Festival chairwoman, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to appreciate some of the great achievements of women throughout history, celebrate what it means to be a woman today or just to have fun and meet new people whilst trying something different.
“We have a cornucopia of activities, events, exhibitions, drama, film, comedy, dance, sport, therapies and workshops which support, stimulate, illuminate and elucidate.
“We celebrate daughters of Dundee and beyond, including Mary Slessor and Mary Lily Walker, through walks and talks, highlight notable women in science in collaboration with the Women In Science Festival and learn about the work of Catherine Blair, who was instrumental in setting up Scottish Women Rural Institutes.”
The theme for this year’s Dundee Women’s Festival is “Equality for women is progress for all”, sentiments echoed by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who said: “Countries with more gender equality have better economic growth.”
Dundee Women’s Festival will be taking place at various locations throughout the city and the full programme can be found online.
