A convited drink-driver will remain the landlord of a Dundee pub.
Michael Portsmith, who is the licence holder for the Saltire pub in Meadowside, was fined £500 and banned from driving for 14 months last October.
He appeared before the council’s licensing board on Thursday and could have seen his licence revoked or suspended as a result of the conviction.
At the time of his court appearance, his solicitor, Jim Laverty, told the court the offence would have “very long-reaching consequences” for his client.
But the board were impressed with Mr Portsmith’s arguments during the session and decided only to endorse the chief constable’s report into the matter.
At the hearing, Mr Portsmith said: “When I got pulled over by the police I cooperated fully and the next day I phoned the LSO (licensing standards officer) to inquire as to how I would inform the board.
“(Following my conviction) I agreed to go on a course, which I have now completed.
“It has if anything enhanced my position as a licence holder because I can now better inform my customers about the time limits of alcohol still being in your body.
“I’d stopped drinking at about 2pm that afternoon and I thought I was OK to drive.
“But I now know it takes two hours for every unit. I just want to apologise to you.”
