Prominent Dundee musician and teacher John Tonner has died at the age of 67 after a short illness.
Born in Lochee, Mr Tonner attended Mid Craigie Primary and Stobswell Secondary before leaving to take up an electrician apprenticeship.
However, he soon developed a talent for brass instruments and started playing the cornet in St Margaret’s Band, quickly progressing to become one of the best cornet players in the country.
Mr Tonner took on a teaching role in Dundee in the 1970s, mainly at St John’s High and its feeder primaries.
During his musical career he played or conducted with Forfar and Dundee instrumental bands and was principal cornet of Tullis Russell Brass Band.
He is survived by wife Sharon, sons Eoin and Calum, daughter Hayley and brothers Jimmy and Douglas. His funeral is at Dundee Parish Church (St Mary’s) on Monday.
