Pecha Kucha’s biggest “chit chat” to date banished Dundee’s City of Culture 2017 blues.
The city’s creative community turned out in force at the seventh Pecha Kucha night in the Bonar Hall on Thursday evening, a day after Dundee lost out to Hull in the national culture competition.
Over 300 people attended the seventh Pecha Kucha “chit chat” in Japanese where presenters talk through 20 images for 20 seconds each.
The first speaker was Stewart Murdoch, who led the City of Culture 2017 bid, and talked about the next “Dundee decade” of culture.
Topics ranged from Sharon Dickie’s talk on the rebuilding of her home city of Christchurch following the 2011 earthquake to voiceover artist Kevin Parr’s range of characters for computer games.
Encouraged by organiser Gillian Easson from Creative Dundee to make “as much noise as possible” the crowd cheered on the 12 speakers and musical finale from Sonny Carntyne.
The range of creative events in the city planned for the coming months was highlighted when technical gremlins briefly halted proceedings.
What could have been an uncomfortable 10 minutes was ably filled by Gillian passing the microphone around the crowd for an extended commercial break showcasing upcoming events in Dundee and Arbroath.
The evening ended on an emotional note when Gillian and her husband Lyall Bruce were given a standing ovation and Dundee filmmaker Dylan Drummond presented Gillian with flowers.
The next Pecha Kucha takes place in February. See more at www.creativedundee.com/pecha-kucha-night-dundee.
