Dundee urged to create its answer to Writers’ Walk in Sydney
ByGrant Smith
The great and the good of Dundee should be honoured by a Discovery Walk of manhole covers at the waterfront.
The proposal has been made by city resident Kelly Marr, who is originally from Australia and has taken inspiration from the Writers’ Walk in Sydney.
This is a series of metal plaques set in the ground bearing quotes and biographical details about the likes of author and TV presenter Clive James and Barry Humphries, the creator of Dame Edna Everage.
Kelly said: “The main difference with Discovery Walk is that rather than focusing on writers it would be acknowledging famous Dundonians and Dundee’s contributions in the arts, sciences, literature, politics and so forth.
“Obvious suggestions could be Brian Cox, Admiral Duncan and Mary Slessor.”
Councillor Fraser Macpherson said: “Kelly has arranged a meeting at Dundee University with a number of stakeholders next month and if anyone is interested, or has any views about this proposal, contact me at discoverywalk@frasermacpherson.org.uk.”
