Twnety firefighters were called to the Mill o’ Mains area of Dundee on Saturday after the roof of a terrace house caught fire.
Crews met heavy smoke at the Mull Terrace home shortly after 12.50pm.
Watch manager Fraser Johnston from Kingsway East station said: “We’ve got a fire in the roofspace of one house that was held back by the fire break in the attic space from spreading. The next door was heavily smoke logged.
“Crews from Kingsway East, Blackness Road and Macalpine Road stations have been engaged in extinguishing the fire. We were given information en route that all persons were out of the property which made it easier for us.
“On arrival there was heavy smoke issuing from the terrace properties.”
Crew members wearing breathing apparatus used one main jet and one hose reel jet to extinguish the blaze and then began cutting away and damping down to ensure the fire had not spread.
Initial investigations suggested the fire was probably caused by an electrical fault. The blaze caused “significant damage” to the end terrace property while the next-door property was smoke logged.
Firefighters were in attendance at the two buildings until 3.30pm and the occupants had to find alternative accommodation on Saturday night.
