Calls for more action to tackle Dundee seagulls menace

Labour councillor Richard McCready has called on the city council to review its policies for controlling seagulls.
He and Dundee West MP Jim McGovern met people in Harrison Avenue, Ardler, to hear their complaints about the birds. Resident Helen Potter said the gulls had become a health and safety hazard.
“The sheer number of them that often land in our garden can be quite scary especially with our young granddaughter around,” she said.
“The mess they leave behind can be very dangerous if she comes into contact with it.”
Mr McCready has written to the city council’s environment director, querying the £85 charge for households for control measures.
“I believe that other councils operate a free scheme of deterring and removing eggs during breeding season when the birds are at their most vicious,” he said.
“We need an all-round review of current measures with no option left off the table.”
Mr McGovern said: “I know that there are restrictions on controlling wild animals but I believe the case can be made that these birds are a public health and safety hazard and more measures should be taken.”
