Flat demolition plans part of Whitfield redevelopment
ByThe Courier Reporter
Plans have been unveiled to knock down vacant flats and lock-up garages in Ormiston Crescent and replace them with family houses.
The proposal by Angus Housing Association would be part of the ongoing redevelopment of Whitfield and city council planners have recommended the scheme be approved by councillors next week.
Three blocks of four-storey flats have been earmarked for demolition.
A report says they are “largely inaccessible, no longer suited to modern living and therefore vacant”.
In their place would be built 21 houses, mostly two-storey, semi-detached, and four flats in a two-storey building. The access road to Inveresk Gardens would be extended to provide vehicle access to the site.
The housing association has had to comply with Secure by Design requirements to get Scottish Government funding for the project.
This has seen the siting of the houses carefully chosen to deter criminals, along with fencing planned for the rear gardens.
The report to councillors says: “The Whitfield planning framework highlights that the current housing stock in Whitfield is in a poor condition and that there is a current shortage in affordable housing.”
