Television star Lorraine Kelly has revealed that Tayside House is her “most hated building in the world”.
The presenter’s comments come as the company behind the building’s demolition revealed it was proving a tougher adversary than initially anticipated.
Safedem said work, which was to finish in the next few days, will now take two weeks longer than expected due to stronger concrete in the structure’s lower floors.
The former council headquarters is being dismantled as part of the Dundee Waterfront plan to redevelop the area.
Daybreak presenter Lorraine, who lives in Broughty Ferry, tweeted a photo of the building to her 423,000 followers celebrating its demise.
She posted: “This is my most hated building in the world but soon Tayside House will be no more! Hurrah.”
The photo, taken from the passenger seat of a car, shows what is left of the 18-floor building, generally acknowledged to be one of the city’s least popular structures.
The building is being dismantled by a machine dubbed “the Muncher”.
Safedem’s technical operations manager Barry Ward said: “We haven’t encountered anything unexpected apart from the fact that the concrete strength on the lower levels is getting significantly tougher and stronger.
“It has taken our long-reach machine a little bit longer than we had initially thought it would be. Four weeks was our initial estimate, but we are now looking to be finished by the end of June.
“The machine is not something that people see day in, day out so it does catch the eye and draw attention. People like to take photographs and put them on Facebook and the public stop and look, but that has not caused issues. It is quite interesting to see people’s reaction as they walk past.”
