City Square in Dundee will become Commonwealth Games Square and the city will be “dressed” to celebrate the occasion and welcome competitors and visitors.
The city will also have an athletes’ village for marksmen and women taking part in shooting events at Barry Buddon.
A linked initiative by sportscotland encourages Scots to support a second team Dundee has been matched with South Africa, which will have 147 participants, and Belize, which will have nine.
The details emerged from the latest report to Dundee councillors about arrangements for the 2014 games, to be hosted in Glasgow but involving many other parts of the country.
Dealing with Dundee’s pre-games, games delivery and legacy plans, the policy and resources committee will hear of arrangements to make the most of the opportunities for residents to celebrate.
As well as transforming City Square into Commonwealth Games Square, there will be a Commonwealth Games Festival in involving tourist attractions and retail outlets.
There will be a civic ceremony to welcome athletes and spectators, and plans are being developed to “dress the city” as was done for the London Olympics.
Dundee and Angus councils are working together to create a Commonwealth Games satellite athletes’ village in the city and at the associated shooting venue at the Barry Buddon army range. Fuller details of the village will be available in a few weeks.
It is understood games officials may stay at Dundee University’s West Park Centre, while the competitors will stay at a yet undetermined location in Dundee. There will be athletes, support staff and officials from 38 nations, and Barry Buddon will be open for shooters’ training on July 13 2014 with the competition taking place from July 25 to 29.
The two councils will create a traffic management plan for the games.
