Those wishing to see the Olympic torch this evening have been advised to pick a spot and stick to it by officials.
The Dundee leg of the torch relay will feature two highlights a gathering in the City Square and a celebration event in Baxter Park. However, the public are being warned about the logistics of trying to attend both.
With roads already set to be busy with rush-hour traffic, the arrival of the flame will impose restrictions on a number of routes in the city centre area.
With thousands of people expected to line the streets, those who wish to follow the torch from start to finish are likely to be disappointed.
Chief Inspector Delyth Cunnah said: ”If we tell people to expect the worst then hopefully they won’t be disappointed. If people want to go and see the torch then I would advise them to go to either to the City Square event or Baxter Park one or the other.”
In Baxter Park, Emeli Sande is due on stage at 6.13pm, with Lord Provost Bob Duncan speaking at 6.31pm.
At 6.50pm, following the arrival of the Olympic flame in the park, a cauldron will be lit. Events at the park will come to a close at around 7.15pm.
Last month saw officers from Tayside Police conduct a trial run ahead of today’s torch relay.
A significant deployment of officers hit the streets of Dundee in a bid to prepare for any eventualities come the actual event.
The torch is already guarded by a dedicated police team, but the chief inspector is determined to ensure that all goes smoothly when it arrives in Dundee.
She added: ”We have a number of officers from the Metropolitan Police and a team which have been following the torch across Scotland.
”They will be supplemented by local officers. We believe that we are well prepared and hope that all goes well on the day.”
