A campaign group fighting the proposed closure of a Dundee adult learning centre is set to meet with the city’s leading social worker.
Members of the Kemback Street Action Group claim Alan Baird, Dundee City Council’s social work director, has agreed to meet with them over their concerns.
Around a dozen members of the group gathered outside the City Chambers on Monday night as members of the local authority’s social work committee gathered for their monthly meeting.
The centre, which provides support for adults with learning disabilities, is set to close, with Dundee City Council saying visitor numbers have dropped significantly.
George Stewart, whose son David (47) has Down’s syndrome and cerebral palsy and who has attended the centre for 27 years, admits he has little idea of what the meeting with Mr Baird will hold, but remains optimistic the centre can be saved.
He said: ”We’ve had a very positive discussion with Alan Baird and we are hoping to meet with him in the next few days.
“Obviously we don’t know how that will go, but it’s not over until the fat lady sings. It’s certainly been a positive response, though.”
Plans to close the centre have prompted an outcry and resulted in a city centre demonstration earlier this month.
However, the local authority insists those who use the centre will receive a more personalised service in the future.
Inside the chambers an effort to allow the social work committee to reconsider and reverse its decision to progress with the closure of Kemback Street was defeated by 16 votes to nine.
It comes despite promises a full report on the proposed closure, along with deputations from concerned parties, will be made at the October meeting.
