A city-wide car sharing club could be set up in Dundee to spare drivers from soaring fuel prices and help save the environment.
Car clubs are already up and running in Edinburgh and Glasgow, as well as in several English cities. People who sign up to the scheme are able to rent cars for short periods of time then leave the vehicle in specific parking bays where the next driver can collect it.
A workshop to investigate the possibility of setting up the car club will take place in Abertay University’s Mayar Committee room from 12-1.30pm on Thursday.
Chas Ball, policy director for Carplus, a charity promoting responsible car use, will chair the event.
The Scottish Government has invested £200,000 in a fund to provide grants to areas setting up car clubs last year.
Alistair MacLeod, from Dundee environmental charity Solar Cities Scotland, said, “There would be a large number of cars with the opportunity for members to get instant access.
“What the figures are showing with these kind of car clubs is that they reduce the amount of time people use cars and can save motorists thousands of pounds a year, and as well as being better for the environment it will also help in areas where they are struggling for parking spaces.”
Mr MacLeod said the scheme would need to pay for itself once it was up and running. Anyone interested in attending the meeting should contact alistair@solarcitiesscotland.org.ukIf you want to support the Courier’s call for a fuel duty regulator, click here to add your name to our petition.
