Jane Sheena Moreland, affectionately known to all as Sheena, died earlier this month shortly after learning she was to receive the BEM in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Sheena had worked for more than 40 years for the Dundee-based UK charity the Brittle Bone Society, holding a number of positions.
She was appointed honorary secretary to the trustee board after retiring, a position she held for a number of years until very recently.
While holding this role, Sheena helped coordinate and plan large-scale conference events across the country for those members with the condition Osteogenesis Imperfecta.
Brittle Bone Society founding member Margaret Grant said: “I was pleased and delighted when my husband David read The Courier to hear that Sheena had been awarded the BEM but saddened to hear of her passing.
“People from Tayside and Cumbria attended her funeral along with her family and friends.
“I first heard of Sheena when Dr Paterson and I were forming the Brittle Bone Society. Sheena was Dr Paterson’s secretary and I needed someone to help me with the increasing correspondence which grew so much that Sheena would come to my home and she soon became my right-hand person.
“She helped to organise meetings and road trips. She was a great comfort to members who telephoned, always ready to share a worry and pop on the kettle for a warm drink.
“Even after she retired, despite not being in great health, Sheena took up the post to our then council, as it was called, then to our trustee board and travelled to the various meetings, giving it her all.”
