Dundee has one of the worst records for recycling household waste in Scotland, a city council report has revealed.
In 2011-12 only 31.8% of rubbish was recycled, down from 34.6% the previous year. That was the 26th lowest figure out of 32 local authorities.
The council said performance had been adversely affected by a change in methodology, including the reclassification of residues from the city’s incinerator.
“However it is clear that significant change is required in our recycling strategy to achieve the challenging targets being set by the government within the Zero Waste Plan and the associated regulations.
“Work is under way to develop the existing strategy,” the council said.
The city does better on other environmental measures. Public satisfaction levels with the quality of street cleaning operations are extremely high and the council is ranked third.
A 2012 survey found 96% of people questioned were satisfied with the service. The costs of street cleaning remain high, but the council is hoping to improve efficiency.
Dundee also does very well on roads maintenance. The proportion of A, B and C-class roads that need work is one of the lowest in the country.
