The first anniversary of the sad passing of Michael Marra will be marked tonight with the unveiling of a portrait and a plaque in memory of the “Dundee bard” at Lochee Library.
The portrait, by Fife artist Donald Smart, will hang in the library while the plaque will bear a wee quote from Hermless, Michael’s wonderful “alternative Scottish National Anthem”.
While mourning his untimely death on October 23, 2012, the Marra family want to commemorate the anniversary with an “optimistic” call to his fans to help them raise money to bring a Sistema Orchestra to Dundee.
Michael’s daughter Alice Marra says: “One year ago today, we lost our Michael. I would like to take this opportunity to thank every single person who has helped us in any way over the past year.
“The kind words, stories and tributes along with donations to our memorial trust have been a great comfort through a time of huge sadness.
“However, a year on, we are trying to make an optimistic sound. You too can make an optimistic sound by joining us in our campaign to bring a Sistema orchestra to Dundee in memory of Michael.
“Let’s do something to change the lives of thousands of Dundee children living in poverty. Visit www.optimisticsound.org for more details.
“Tonight we will unveil a portrait of Michael by artist Donald Smart which will hang in Lochee Library. In the coming weeks, if you get the chance, head up to the library and have a look.
“Then go hame for your tea.”
