School’s out after summer Harris Academy demolition set for September

The demolition of Harris Academy is expected to begin in September.
Following the final approval of planning permission on Monday, the city council has said it plans to hand over the Perth Road site to the contractors in early August.
A few weeks later the £2 million project to remove asbestos, knock down the building and prepare the site for its replacement will get under way.
The total cost of the new school will be £31m, most of which will come from central government. A report to be considered by councillors next week says the city council’s share should not exceed £12m.
Education convener Stewart Hunter said: “These are exciting times for everyone connected with Harris Academy.
“I am pleased funding through the Scottish Futures Trust will help provide this excellent solution for the school.
“While the traditions of Harris will remain integral to its ethos, the school will be leading the way for a new type of building fit for the educational challenges ahead.”
