A thief has stolen a woman’s handbag after tricking her into getting out of her car in Dundee.

The woman who is in her 60s was in her silver Chevrolet when a man knocked on her car and told her she had a flat tyre. As she got out to take a look, he opened her passenger door, grabbed her handbag and ran off.

The incident happened at around 10.30am on Monday in Americanmuir Road.

The man ran away along Americanmuir Road and down a path into Turriff Street. A man fitting his description was seen a short time later in Camperdown Road, near the Admiral Bar.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the theft or recognises the man’s description.

He is between 5ft 8in and 6ft and of slim build. At the time he wore a navy hooded top, with the hood pulled tight around his face, and dark tracksuit bottoms or trousers.

Chief Inspector Shaun McKillop said: “Police Scotland would ask drivers to be vigilant and always consider the security of their vehicle and property within it. Thieves can not only take advantage of the smallest windows of opportunity, they will be encouraged by seeing items within a vehicle.

“Wherever possible keep goods and personal belongings out of sight. It only takes a second for an opportunist thief to strike.”

Anyone with information is asked to phone 101 or speak to any officer.
