Police are hunting two teenage boys who broke into Dundee’s new multi-million-pound leisure centre for a 4am swim a month before it officially opens.
The incident has sparked fears about a lack of security at the site.
The swimmers, said to be in their late teens, broke into the pool on May 21 but the incident was not reported to the police until last Friday.
Dundee West councillor Fraser Macpherson said: “It is very concerning that contractors cannot keep a massively expensive project secure.”
The £31 million new Olympia leisure centre replaces the old Olympia, which will be demolished to make way for the £45 million V&A at Dundee.
The leisure complex has been beset by construction delays. Originally due to open in December last year, that date was pushed back to the start of 2013.
As recently as three weeks before it was due to open, Leisure and Culture Dundee were insisting it was on schedule. It was then announced it would be delayed by six months.
A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “We are aware of this incident and our enquiries are ongoing.”
A Dundee City Council spokesman said: “We are aware that a report was made to police by the contractor who was responsible for the building at the time.”
