Scotland’s most famous Olympian gave the thumbs-up to Dundee’s City of Culture bid over rivals Aberdeen when he was interviewed on TV.
Sir Chris Hoy gave his backing to Dundee when asked by One Show presenter Matt Baker which city he would like to see claim the honour.
He said: “I used to go to university in St Andrews and that was just across from Dundee, so that would be good.”
However, he then decided to play it safe and hedge his bets adding: “Either would be nice though.”
Dundee is competing in the UK’s City of Culture in 2017 against rival bids from Chester, East Kent, Hastings and Bexhill-on-Sea, Hull, Plymouth, Southend-on-Sea, Leicester and Portsmouth and Southampton, as well as Aberdeen, the only other Scottish entry.
Other famous faces acting as ambassadors for the city’s bid are Dundee-born Hollywood actor Brian Cox, famous as fictional Broughty Ferry man Bob Servant, television star and real Broughty Ferry resident Lorraine Kelly and traditional singer Sheena Wellington.
