Ladbrokes have been given planning permission to open a betting shop in the Happyhillock shopping centre.
A report by a city council planning officer said the centre appeared to be vibrant and was occupied by businesses providing a range of services.
“It is considered that the use of one of the units by a betting office will add to this variety and provide an additional service to local residents.
“As some of the other units are occupied by retailers which provide a range of goods, it is considered that the loss of one of the retail units to a different use class will not be detrimental to the overall shopping provision for the surrounding area.”
The officer noted the premises were only 25 metres from the nearest houses, but faced away from them.
“The use of the unit as a betting office will have a minimal affect on the environmental quality enjoyed by local residents and this effect would be no greater than if the unit was reoccupied by a retailer,” he said.
