Parents have been urged not to be selfish parkers outside a city school and to keep youngsters safe after some caused problems with their cars.
The issue arose when children went back to Camperdown/St Clement’s RC Primary School last week and a crossing guard was needed to get children safely around the parked cars left by inconsiderate parents.
However, after complaints were made to city council education convener Stewart Hunter, whose children also attend the school, the council moved quickly to put down yellow lines and a pedestrian barrier is soon to be installed as well.
Mr Hunter said he saw for himself the safety issues when picking up his children and other parents urged him to get something done about it.
He said: “On Thursday when I was picking up my own children I saw there was a problem with the parking because there were no yellow lines.
“Straight away I contacted the chief executive and we got people out on Friday and again on Monday, so we now have a yellow line outside the school.
“We are also getting a pedestrian barrier put up right beside the exit because we don’t want kids running out into the road.
“It was a very prompt response to the problem by the council’s officers.
“The yellow lines are already making a huge difference and the vast majority of parents are parking nearby and walking their children into school.”
Despite the swift action, Mr Hunter said one or two parents seem to still be ignoring the safety risk to children and parking on top of the yellow lines to drop off their children.
He said: “There is enough parking nearby for parents to park safely but one or two parents are still dropping off at the entrance. I would urge these parents not to do this.
“The yellow lines are there for a reason. It is a busy road and a bus route, so we would really appreciate children not having to negotiate parked cars there.”
He added: “The school crossing patrol did a great job on Thursday helping the kids.”
