Walking tours another step in Dundee’s City of Culture bid

Danny McDonald from GoDundee will be giving culture tours of the city.
Danny McDonald from GoDundee will be giving culture tours of the city.

A walking tour visiting the key players in Dundee UK’s City of Culture 2017 bid will set off this month.

The City of Culture event is the fifth themed tour from the GoDundee network, which aims to showcase the city’s strengths through its “learning journeys”.

The trip will take around 45 people to eight different venues around Dundee, including WASPS’ studios, Dundee Rep and Fleet Collective.

GoDundee spokesman Danny McDonald said: “The event is designed to complement the City of Culture bid and we’re hoping to record it in one way or another it may go in as an appendice to the final bid.

“It gives a flavour of cultural things that are happening. Another element was seeing if we could combine the information-giving events we’ve done in the past and include a degree of performance.”

Coincidentally, the tour is on the same date as Dundee Dance Day so the group will take in a performance of the Bharatiya Ashram dance group at the Caird Hall.

Mr McDonald said: “It’s quite a neat wee package. There is the Big Print event in the Duncan Of Jordanstone car park printing the slabs. We are also taking the opportunity to have an insight into how the bid is progressing, so Leisure and Culture Dundee director Stewart Murdoch will be giving a talk at some point.

“We are also looking, through Creative Dundee, to get ideas from the people who turn up for the event about what they would like to see Dundee doing in 2017. The Rep will talk to us about the full range of their activities, so we’ll go through the costume department and sets and we’ll also take in a brief bit of rehearsal for their forthcoming play Victoria.”

The tour follows a successful science-themed bus tour of the city in May.

Mr McDonald said: “The feedback has been very positive indeed and different folk came along than on previous learning journeys.”

The tour takes place on Saturday August 31 from 9.30am. Tickets for the event are available in advance from the DCA box office on 909900 or in person.
