Dundee has been awarded the title of Scottish University of the Year.
The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016 said the university’s improvements over the past year means it deserves the prestigious accolade.
St Andrews University has retained its position as the best performer in Scotland overall. The Fife university is the only Scottish institution in the top 20 university’s in the UK.
Guide editor Alastair McCall said: “The University of Dundee is the epitome of what a good university should be.
“It provides an outstanding education and university experience for its students, is a key driver in the regional and national economy, and its researchers particularly in the medical field are pushing back the boundaries of knowledge and the treatments available to the wider benefit of society.”
Dundee’s success follows a sharp rise in its overall ranking in the Good University Guide’s league table, which will be published in The Sunday Times this weekend.
The institution, which also has the best student experience in Scotland, has risen eight places to 37th in the UK rankings and to fourth in Scotland.
Dundee’s reputation as a leader in the life sciences has been enhanced in the past year after strong results in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, which placed the university top in the UK for biological sciences.
The opening of the £50 million Discovery Centre, to encourage interaction between disciplines, also impressed inspectors.
