The end is in sight for a Stobswell regeneration project as work begins on the transformation of a derelict store branded the “tattiest shop in Dundee”.
The former Buy Right store at 191 Princes Street has been vacant for years and residents say it is bringing down the appearance of the whole area.
Once a furniture and electrical store, the ground floor has not operated as a shop since 1998 and has been considered a blight on efforts to regenerate the area.
Sally Romilly, of One World Centre next door, welcomed the start of the refurbishment which will bring positive changes for her premises as well.
She said: “We just can’t believe it. We have been complaining about this for 15 years.
“People are always coming in making comments about us being next to the tattiest shop in Dundee.
“We feel it reflects badly on those around about and gives the area a bad reputation.
“They started measuring up last year but we’ve seen a lot more workmen coming and going lately.
“We are going to be getting a new frontage at the same time which is great as we always felt it wasn’t worth doing as it would only show up the contrast with that shop.”
The long-running saga now looks to be nearing its end as Dundee City Council has confirmed a restoration project has begun at the empty shop.
The spokesman said the council aims to offer a lease of the property on the market once the renovation project is complete.
He said: “After the successful compulsory purchase of 191 Princes Street, Dundee City Council developed a refurbishment programme for the property.
“Works are now ongoing with a view to marketing the unit for lease when this project is completed.
“The property will be marketed by the city development department’s estates team on www.locate-dundee.co.uk.”
