A Dundee thief found drunk in a phone box by police officers claimed food he had stolen came from a supermarket skip.
Dundee Sheriff Court heard the meat, valued at about £200, had actually been stolen from a chest freezer in a garage on Lyndhurst Terrace.
Steven Boyd, 24, of Burnside Court, was jailed for six months on Monday after admitting the theft on June 15. The court heard Boyd’s last 20 convictions had resulted in custodial sentences.
Depute fiscal Bill Kermode told the court police had received reports of two men trying to sell meat from a wheelie bin on Foggylea Gardens. Boyd was later traced by officers in a nearby phone box.
Ross Bennett, defending, said the offence had been “a foolish escapade”.
Sheriff Tom Hughes told Boyd: “You have a dreadful record and a custodial sentence is the only way to deal with this.”
