Cruise ships carrying hundreds of tourists could soon be sailing up the Tay to Dundee.

It is hoped the liners will berth in the estuary before passengers are ferried to a multi-million-pound marina proposed for the waterfront.

Ambitious designs for the state-of-the-art dock at City Quay were unveiled by the council this week.

It could prove a major boost to the estimated £137 million that tourism brought to the city in 2011.

The marina is the centrepiece of a new masterplan to promote Dundee as a premier destination to the travel industry.

The huge redevelopment of the waterfront and arrival of the V&A could see five-star hotel operators eyeing the area.

It has also been announced that the frigate Unicorn will undergo refurbishment and take pride of place at the new marina, near the Discovery.

It is thought Dundee could become a cultural destination for tourists seeking city breaks. The extensive masterplan will also see the city’s airport given a facelift, complementing work already under way at another travel hub, Dundee train station.

All of the proposals will go before councillors at next Monday’s meeting of the city development committee.
