Shocking Dundee heart health stats over 250 deaths a year
ByAlan Wilson
Dundee is among the top 10 worst areas in the UK for heart health, with more than 250 deaths from coronary heart disease every year.
New statistics also reveal the city is the third worst area in Scotland, with only Glasgow and West Dunbartonshire faring even worse.
Poverty and deprivation, with associated poor diet and lack of exercise, are seen as the biggest factors in causing coronary heart disease, according to the British Heart Foundation (BHF).
New figures released by the BHF for the period 2009-11 show that, while deaths from heart attacks are on the decrease, the bottom line is more people are living with heart disease itself and the illness is still Scotland’s biggest killer.
For the previous period, 2008-10, Dundee was also third in Scotland behind Glasgow and North Lanarkshire, with 128 deaths per 100,000 population during that time, placing Dundee sixth worst in the UK.
The new figures show that rate has fallen slightly to 112 deaths per 100,000 population, putting Dundee in 10th place in the UK league table.
