Historic Scotland has granted permission for the replacement of the steps and wheelchair ramp at Caird Hall.
The work is part of an overhaul of City Square that is well under way and is designed to make the civic space more user-friendly and flexible.
The council told Historic Scotland that it recognised the potential impact on the character and setting of the “nationally important” A-listed building and the need for any works to protect its features of architectural and historic interest.
The ramp, created in the 1960s, no longer complies with disabled access standards.
“High-quality materials will be used in place of the current inappropriate modern materials, the historic ground features of the hall to the front will be retained, and accessibility to the halls will be vastly improved particularly for those requiring disabled accessed,” the council said.
The replacement sandstone steps will improve pedestrian access and prevent water getting into underground storage areas.
The depth of the tread will be cut “to allow a more natural and usable step width” and stainless steel handrails will be added at the sides of the steps.
