The Post Office has defended its decision to move its premises in Whitfield despite a 400-signature protest petition.
Some elderly customers who are used to going to the post office in the shopping centre have complained about the journey to the new site at the Hawthorns, which will open at the end of the month.
Councillor Brian Gordon said residents’ views had been ignored.
He said: “Those who live in lower Whitfield will be forced to cross three busy roads to get to the new post office.
“Many of them just aren’t prepared, either through fear or inability, to walk through the centre of Whitfield.”
A Post Office spokeswoman said: “During the consultation we received a small amount of feedback about the new location being 430 metres from the current site.
“It is served by two frequent direct bus routes and there is customer car parking at the rear, so we are sure the post office is suitably located and will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.”
